Emojis und ihre Tücken

2015 wurde ein Emoji zum Wort des Jahres vom Oxford Dictionary gekürt. Das „Gesicht mit Freudentränen“ war in dem besagten Jahr eins der meist verwendeten Zeichen.

Doch Emoji ist nicht gleich Emoji. Da es keine allgemeingültigen Bedeutungen für diese Grafiken gibt, interpretiert sie jeder etwas anders. Dies kann zu Missverständnissen und Problemen in der Kommunikation führen. Zudem werden die Emojis je nach Betriebssystem anders oder eventuell gar nicht dargestellt.

Um zukünftig einen bewussteren Umgang mit Emojis zu erlangen, werden in diesem Leporello die besagten Probleme beispielhaft aufgezeigt. Im zweiten Teil (auf der Rückseite) ist Hintergrundwissen zu Kommunikationsprozessen und den Emojis im Allgemeinen zu finden.

Communication with emojis

In 2015, one Emoji was named ‚Word of the Year‘ by the Oxford Dictionary. The ‚face with tears of joy‘ was one of the most used characters of that year.

However, an emoji doesn't necessarily equal an emoji! Since there are no universal meanings for these graphics, everyone interprets them a little differently. This can lead to misunderstandings and communication problems. In addition, emojis are different depending on the operating system and may or may not be displayed.

In order to achieve a more conscious use of emojis in the future, the problems mentioned are exemplified in this Leporello. The second part (on the back) also provides background information on communication processes and emojis in general.

Das Medium Leporello stellt eine Allegorie zu den endlos durchgehenden Chatverläufen dar, in denen Emojis meist zum Einsatz kommen.

Die Arbeit lässt sich im komplett ausgelegten Zustand als lange Bahn erfassen, kann aber auch seitenweise - immer eine Doppelseite nach der anderen, gelesen werden. Am Ende angelangt, kann einfach weiter umgeblättert werden um automatisch zum zweiten Teil und damit quasi zur „Rückseite“ der Arbeit zu gelangen.

The medium Leporello is an allegory to the endless through-going chat, in which emojis are mostly used. The work can be read in a completely laid-out condition, as a long web of paper, but also page by page (always one double page at a time). At the end, you automaticly get to the second part and thus to the back of the work.
